Here my hair is covered in the treatment

The above video is my most watched and most asked about video on my YouTube Channel. I think I uploaded this video 2 years ago and I still get questions on it at least weekly. So I was in need of a protein treatment and I thought I would revisit it and answer some of the frequently asked questions about this treatment.

First, I modified the recipe a tiny bit. Mostly due to laziness and not wanting to waste my food. So I used 1 egg, about a cup of yogurt and eye balled the honey and olive oil. The mixture was a tad less messy/liquidy than in the video. Next, I applied to my dry, unwashed hair. I knew I was going follow-up with my mud wash and moisturizing deep conditioner. I let the mixture work its magic on my hair for about an hour. I rinsed with cool water because hot water will cook the egg and leave you with a big ole mess. My hair felt like straw once I rinsed, which is what I expected. I applied my Eden BodyWorks Jojoba Monoi Deep Conditoner, my Heat Therapy Wrap and let that sit on my hair for about an hour. I rinsed in the shower and cleansed with my Terressentials Lavender Garden Mud Wash. My hair felt soft and strong. I was pleased with my results.

• How often do I do a protein treatment?

I only do protein treatments as needed. Whenever my hair feels weak, easy to break or my strands are really stretchy, I know it’s time for protein. Now, I have been doing my own hair for years now and I can tell when it’s screaming for a treatment but here is link that can help you know when your hair wants protein.

• What can I use to substitute the honey?

Honey is a humectant and I think in this treatment it acts as a balancer for the protein. I would say replace it with something really moisturizing like your hair’s favorite oil. But I always need to follow-up with a moisturizing deep conditioner.

• What does the treatment smell like?

It mostly smells like yogurt.

• Can members of the male sex use this treatment?

Um, anyone with hair can use this treatment.

• How do I store the remaining mixture?

I don’t. If I have any left I throw it out because I know I will probably not do a protein treatment again for a while. I would guess it would last a couple of days in the fridge but I have no idea what will happen if it’s frozen.

• What can I use to substitute yogurt?

Mayo or sour cream should work.

It may take a couple days but my hair loves to be wild and undefined naturally.  What style does your hair always fall into? No matter what I start with whether it’s a braid-out, bantu knot-out it loves to turn into a no-out . And honestly I love it!

Do you watch Shameless Maya? I’m sure you do and if you don’t you should. She is some kind of amazing. Her energy is ridiculous.

In one of her recent videos she notified her subscribers that she will soon be shaving off her beautiful hair. How nice of her to give us a heads up lol. Now honestly, I could care less if she dyed her hair lime green and wore a spatula has a hat. I am a huge believer in “doing me” and I love encouraging others to do the same. But it is definitely going to be interesting to see and read what her viewers have to say about her big chop. She recognizes that her fabulous curly hair is a huge part of her YouTube appeal and sees it has a crutch. She wants to be loved for who she is and what she has to offer not by her hair. Boy, if that’s not something get inspired by!

This video just got me thinking. Fear is absolutely a powerful and crippling thing. It holds a lot of us (including me) from fulfilling our dreams big and small. It’s way past time to think about the things that you want to do especially if the only thing that is holding you back is fear. Fear of the unknown, of what others might think or fear of failing. It’s easy to talk about, not easy to go out there and do. But even if shaving my head is not on my bucket list there are tons of other “crazy” things and I can draw inspiration from Maya.
